What Is Cold Brew Coffee?

Cold brew coffee is not just hot coffee that's been left to cool; it's a different brewing method altogether. Unlike traditional coffee, which is brewed with hot water, cold brew coffee is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in cold water for an extended period, usually 12-24 hours. The result is a coffee concentrate that's less acidic and less bitter than hot-brewed coffee, making it perfect for sipping over ice or diluting with water or milk.

The Toddy System is a tried-and-true method for making cold brew coffee at home. Developed in 1964 by Todd Simpson, this system is designed to extract the rich flavors of coffee without the bitterness. Here's how it works:

Ingredients You'll Need:

Coarsely ground coffee beans
Cold, filtered water

The Equipment:

Brewing Process:

Prepare the Coffee: Begin by coarsely grinding your coffee beans. For the Toddy system, a medium-coarse grind works best. You'll typically need around 12 ounces (340 grams) of coffee. You can also use pre-ground coffee!
Assemble the Toddy: Place one of the Toddy filters in the bottom of the brewing container, ensuring that it covers the drain hole completely. Then, add half of your ground coffee.
The method of layering your coffee and water into the brewer helps to decrase clogging and ensure all the coffee is equally covered with the right amount of water
Drain and Collect: Place the Toddy brewing container over the glass decanter. Remove the rubber stopper and let the concentrate drain into the decanter. This should take around 1-2 hours.
Serve and Enjoy: To make a cup of cold brew, dilute the concentrate with water using a 1:3 ration (this is my preferred ration) yours may be less or more. I recommend trying a few blends to see what works!
